Here's Our Latest Newsletter!

I'm doing my very best to keep these newsletters coming. It's important for CASA, and our university. Now, I think it's safe to say are university has four newsletters in circulation. Not bad for a wee bitty community-but-wishes-it-were-four-year college! Here's the new flyer. You can click the pictures to zoom in on them.

Getting started again!

So we have only a few tutors this summer, but there will still be lots of work going on!
In addition to new online content, we plan to tutor for four math classes and a few english classes. We are also getting some great new pencils, pens, and pencil sharpeners. Drop by CASA in a few weeks to get your own promotional pencil sharpener, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood tutoring center!

The Calm Between the Storms

What a semester this has been! Our staff of eight tutors has been absolutely swamped. This semester we tutored over 53 students over the course of 560 hours! Now we can sit back and relax!

CASA also helped out with the UNM-Taos graduation. We spent a lovely day last Friday blowing up balloons and folding programs. UNM-Taos isn't just a teeny community college any more! We had over 120 graduates this year, many of whom tutored fervently at CASA.

The we moved the office around. Luckily, I missed most of the desk dragging and cabinet pushing, but the office looks super great now. The tutors have workstations with much better feng shui.

Did I say relax earlier?
Just kidding. Now we have COMPASS tests for new students, as well as some educational online content that we need to generate. The summer newsletter is still in process, and all these internet bloggy gadgets need updating. There's no rest for a CASA tutor!

Mush on!

Even with the barrage of snow hitting Taos, we still have school and tutoring! We had a 2 hour delay on Monday, though it was not snowing that morning, and all drove our cars at snails pace this morning in the flurries. We UNM Students and staff aren't afraid of the snow!

Drive safe, everyone, but keep on coming to tutoring!

Our First Workshop

CASA just hosted our first workshop of the semester!
The workshop was called Math Games.

The purpose of this workshop was to introduce some fun into students' math lives. One of the students said that doing math today was like "learning English without reading any stories." In the workshop, we did some activities that took mathematical thinking and put it into context of a story: Something applicable, something useful, something we can relate to, something fun.

We played Sudoku, some logic grid puzzles, and multiplication war. The entire workshop solved puzzles as a group and discussed how math games affect learning styles. We had fun trying to play multiplication war with

Outreach!

Part of our duties here at CASA is to reach out to the students of UNM Taos to tell them about our services. You may be seeing us in your classes. Outreach usually involves us interrupting class to tell you about the wonders of our tutoring!
